Role purpose :
- Support and conduct nematology research for development of novel products for biological control of plant-parasitic nematodes
- Conduct nematology research to continuously improve quantitative and qualitative methods that improve and streamline the development of nematode biological control products.
Accountabilities: :
- Work with the Group Lead to set priorities on work activities
- Establish and maintain cultures of novel bacterial isolates and nematode populations to provide timely and high quality samples for x-functional work (nematology, molecular biology, fermentation, quality control) and regulatory compliance
- Run efficacy trials to generate data in order to select new isolates (matrix)
- Determine the efficacy of development products and/or formulations using GH efficacy trials and lab bioassays or other analytical methods
- Analyze (statistically if necessary) and summarize data to support product recommendations
- Develop and maintain nematology research standard operating procedures and standard protocols for lab and greenhouse activities in a standard format
- Maintain a laboratory notebook and other records in accordance with best scientific practice and company policy
- Participate in internal meetings and professional societies to present / promote approved scientific data to support Syngenta products.
Knowledge, Skills &
Experience:
Critical knowledge: :
- Formal science based education, PHD in nematology (preferred). MS degree with a minimum of 5 years industry experience will be considered.
- In-depth understanding of plant-parasitic nematodes
- Knowledge of sterile technique and laboratory weights and measures
- Knowledge of working with lab equipment, autoclaves, hoods, centrifuges
Critical experience :
- Greenhouse experimentation and management
- Nematode culture, extraction and enumeration
- Microscopy
Critical technical, professional and personal capabilities :
- Excellent spoken and written English, good oral and written communication skills
- Familiarity and comfort with standard office software such as MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
Critical leadership capabilities :
- Proven ability to work on a team
- Ability to train and mentor others
